Former Portugal captain Luis Figo has called on Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA president, accusing him of undermining the office and betraying the trust of the global football community.

In a post on his official X page, Figo said he had joined others within the football world in demanding Infantino’s resignation, insisting it was necessary to protect the future of the sport.

“Today I join others from across our game and call for Gianni Infantino to resign as FIFA President,” Figo wrote.

The Ballon d’Or winner accused the FIFA chief of failing to uphold the standards expected of the office, alleging that Infantino had acted in his own interest rather than that of football.

“Infantino has debased the office that he promised to elevate. He has lied, deceived and tried to feather his own nest at the expense of the game he is supposed to serve,” he said.

Figo also claimed that the FIFA president no longer enjoyed the confidence of key figures within world football.

“He has lost the support of his senior staff, his closest advisers, the vast majority of people who devote their lives to this sport and even, it would seem, the FIFA Peace Prize winner,” he added.

The former Barcelona and Real Madrid midfielder concluded by urging Infantino to leave office immediately.

“It is too late to save his dignity but it is not too late to save football. He should go. Now.”
