The Federal Government has unveiled a comprehensive framework aimed at transforming intellectual property (IP) into bankable financial assets to unlock investment and drive growth in Nigeria’s creative economy.

The framework, titled Comprehensive Framework for the Development of Intellectual Property Commercialisation and Securitisation for the Creative Industry in Nigeria, was presented to the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, under the ministry’s Afreximbank project on improving intellectual property protection in Nigeria.

According to the ministry, the framework was developed by L&A Legal in collaboration with key stakeholders and is the first of its kind in Nigeria to provide a roadmap for converting intellectual property into financeable assets.

The initiative is expected to create new opportunities for investment, financing, enterprise development and wealth creation across the country’s creative industries.

The ministry described intellectual property as one of the most valuable assets in the creative economy, adding that unlocking its commercial value remains central to its vision for sustainable growth.

It said the framework establishes a pathway for the commercialisation and securitisation of intellectual property, enabling creators and businesses to leverage their copyrights, trademarks, patents and other intangible assets to access finance.

According to the ministry, the initiative also forms part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s intellectual property ecosystem, enhance protection for creators and position the creative industry as a key driver of economic diversification under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The framework was developed under the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy’s partnership with Afreximbank to improve intellectual property protection and monetisation in Nigeria.
