The arrest of a suspected vandal linked to the vandalization of six transmission towers along the Yola–Jalingo 330kV transmission line has once again highlighted the growing threat posed by attacks on Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced on Wednesday that the suspect was apprehended following a joint operation with the Nigeria Police Force, with part of the stolen transmission tower components also recovered.

According to the company, the affected towers—numbered T995, T998, T999, T1002, T1003 and T1004—were discovered during a routine patrol by TCN engineers on July 29, 2026.

The inspection revealed extensive damage after vandals reportedly dismantled critical bracing members from the transmission structures, making away with about 130 tower components.

The theft left the towers structurally weakened and exposed to the risk of collapse, posing a serious threat to the stability of electricity transmission along the corridor.

Recognising the potential danger to the national grid, TCN immediately partnered with the Nigeria Police Force to launch a joint operation in the affected host community on July 30.

During the operation, security officials met with the village head and youth leaders, seeking their cooperation in identifying those behind what the company described as an attack on critical national infrastructure.

The collaborative effort yielded results on August 1 when police informed TCN that a principal suspect had been arrested. Authorities also recovered part of the stolen transmission tower materials, which TCN officials later inspected to confirm their authenticity.

The company has called for the suspect to face full prosecution while investigations continue to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged vandalism syndicate.

According to TCN, investigators have already obtained useful leads from the arrested suspect, providing fresh momentum in the effort to dismantle the criminal network responsible for repeated attacks on transmission facilities.

The latest incident underscores the persistent challenge of vandalism confronting Nigeria’s power sector.

Transmission towers are critical components of the national electricity grid, carrying high-voltage power from generating stations to distribution networks across the country.

Damage to these facilities can disrupt power supply, increase maintenance costs and delay efforts to improve electricity reliability.

Beyond the immediate financial losses associated with replacing stolen components and repairing damaged infrastructure, such attacks threaten years of investment in expanding and modernising the nation’s transmission network.

TCN condemned the recurring attacks on electricity infrastructure, describing them as a serious threat to national development and the stability of electricity supply.

The company appealed to residents of host communities and members of the public to remain vigilant by reporting suspicious activities around transmission installations to security agencies or the nearest TCN office.

It stressed that safeguarding critical national infrastructure cannot be left to security agencies alone but requires the active participation of communities, traditional leaders and other stakeholders.

As police investigations continue, the arrest represents a significant breakthrough in efforts to curb vandalism of electricity infrastructure.

However, the incident also serves as a reminder of the continuing challenge of protecting Nigeria’s power assets from criminal networks whose activities undermine the country’s quest for a more reliable electricity supply.
