Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has announced the successful completion of the first robotics-assisted surgery at the Imo Specialist Hospital, Umuguma.
Uzodimma disclosed this in a statement via his X handle on Friday, August 21, describing the development as a major milestone in the state’s healthcare sector.
“Today, I am delighted as we witness a historic milestone at Imo Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, with the first robotics-assisted surgery,” the governor said.

According to him, the state government has completed the upgrade of the specialist hospital, including the construction of a dedicated building for its Robotics Center.
The centre, he said, is being operated under a public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement and is equipped with modern facilities, advanced technology and improved medical infrastructure.
Uzodimma said the investment was aimed at positioning the hospital to offer quality and accessible healthcare services to residents of the state.
“I am proud that we are positioning Imo Specialist Hospital to provide quality, accessible, and world-class healthcare for Ndi Imo,” he said.
The governor said the state’s ambition extends beyond providing healthcare to residents, noting that the facility was also being developed as a potential destination for medical tourism.
“Beyond serving our people, our vision is to make the hospital a credible destination for medical tourism, attracting patients from across Nigeria and beyond,” Uzodimma said.
He added that the first robotics-assisted surgery demonstrated his administration’s commitment to developing a modern healthcare system capable of inspiring public confidence and saving lives.
“This milestone reaffirms our determination to build a healthcare system that inspires confidence, saves lives, and reflects the Imo we aspire to create,” he said.
