Gombe Varsity ASUU Suspends Planned Indefinite Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University branch, has suspended its planned total and indefinite strike, giving the state government and the university’s management until October 2026 to implement agreements reached with the union.

The decision was contained in a resolution issued after the union’s congress meeting held on Friday, August 21, 2026.

The resolution was signed by the branch Chairman, Mustapha Muhammad, and Secretary, Aliyu Shelleng.

The union said the congress considered a letter from the Gombe State government on the commencement of the implementation of the new salary structure for academic staff, as well as a memorandum of understanding reached with the university management on the payment of outstanding arrears owed to members.

Following deliberations, the congress resolved to suspend the planned industrial action to give the government and university management an opportunity to fulfil their commitments.

The union said the suspension is based on the expectation that the agreements would be implemented by the end of October 2026.

“The congress, after extensive deliberations, resolved to suspend the planned commencement of the industrial action in order to give both the government and the university management the benefit of doubt on the implementation of the promises by the end of October 2026,” the resolution stated.

However, ASUU warned that the suspension was conditional and that the planned strike would commence if the government and university management failed to implement the agreements within the stipulated period.

“The congress also resolved to proceed with the planned industrial action in the event of a failure to implement the content of the documents,” the union added.

The development temporarily averts a disruption of academic activities at Gombe State University, while putting the government and management under pressure to meet the October deadline.
