Hull City marked their return to the Premier League in stunning fashion, defeating Manchester United 2-0 to secure their first-ever top-flight victory over the Red Devils.

The Tigers, who returned to England’s top division after a nine-year absence, produced a disciplined performance at home to leave United empty-handed in their opening game of the 2026/27 campaign.

Manchester United had entered the season with renewed confidence following a strong finish to the 2025/26 campaign under Michael Carrick. United finished third last season to secure Champions League qualification and also strengthened their squad during the summer transfer window.

However, it was Hull who dominated the occasion, with defenders Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scoring the goals that delivered a memorable victory for Sergej Jakirovic’s side.

Ajayi opened the scoring after Oli McBurnie’s effort was pushed onto the post by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens. The Nigeria international reacted quickest to fire the rebound into the net.

Hull doubled their advantage when Mendy, the club’s record signing, marked his debut with a goal. The defender rose to head home Regan Slater’s free-kick and put the hosts firmly in control.

The victory completed a remarkable return to the Premier League for Hull, whose last top-flight appearance ended in a 7-1 home defeat to Tottenham in May 2017.

United struggled to create clear-cut opportunities throughout the game, while Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis was rarely troubled despite making five saves.

His most notable intervention came late in the match when he denied United forward Bryan Mbeumo to preserve Hull’s clean sheet.

The result gives Hull a dream start to life back in the Premier League, while United face an early setback in their bid to build on last season’s impressive campaign.
