Newly promoted Hull City marked their return to the Premier League in sensational fashion on Saturday, defeating Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium.

The Tigers delivered a disciplined and energetic performance, scoring twice before the break to secure a memorable victory over one of England’s biggest clubs.

Nigeria international Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, reacting quickest inside the box following a set-piece situation to give the hosts an early advantage.

Manchester United struggled to find a response and were punished again before half-time. Nobel Mendy doubled Hull’s lead in the 38th minute, heading home from a Regan Slater delivery to send the hosts into the interval with a commanding 2-0 advantage.

United enjoyed more possession for much of the contest but struggled to translate their control into clear-cut chances.

Hull, meanwhile, remained compact and well organised, frustrating United’s attacking players and defending their lead effectively throughout the second half.

The result gives Hull a dream start to life back in the Premier League after a lengthy absence, while handing Manchester United and manager Michael Carrick a disappointing beginning to the new campaign.

For Hull, the victory was even more significant given their long wait for a league win over Manchester United, making the emphatic result a memorable way to announce their return to the top flight.

United supporters voiced their frustration after the final whistle, with criticism directed at the team’s performance and their inability to break down a determined Hull defence.

For the newly promoted Tigers, however, it was an afternoon to remember as they claimed all three points and delivered an early statement against one of the Premier League’s most celebrated sides.
