Bella’s lawyers fire back at Sheggz over defamation claims, make fresh allegations

Lawyers representing former Big Brother Naija housemate Bella Okagbue have responded to the cease-and-desist notice reportedly issued by her ex-boyfriend, Sheggz, rejecting the demands contained in the letter.

The response comes after Sheggz’s lawyers accused Bella of making defamatory statements about him and his family following their messy breakup.

In their response, Bella’s legal team argued that the relationship was not simply one that had broken down but involved what they described as a breach of promise to marry and misrepresentation of intentions.

They also alleged that Sheggz obtained several loans from Bella by false pretence, adding that they would pursue the claim before a competent court.

“The relationship between our client and your client is not one that has irretrievably broken down but rather a situation of ‘breach of promise to marry’ and misrepresentation of intentions that amounts to deceit.

“Your client obtained several loans by false pretence from our client, and we shall pursue this claim before a competent court, evidence abound,” Bella’s lawyers wrote.

The legal team also challenged Sheggz’s claims concerning alleged defamatory statements and mental distress, insisting that he must prove the statements he claimed caused him harm.

They further argued that any alleged suffering could not automatically be attributed to Bella and rejected the demands contained in Sheggz’s notice.

“The onus resides with your client to provide receipts of any defamatory claims or whatsoever statement made against his family members. Your client asserts and he must prove the statement that caused him mental distress.

“Please note that your client’s alleged suffering (if any) cannot be attributed to our client. Consequently, your client’s demand for compliance is entirely rejected,” it added.

The response marks another development in the public fallout between the former couple as their dispute takes a legal turn.
