Agege LG boss kicks off 2026 Obasa Summer Games

The Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, on Thursday kicked off the 2026 Obasa Summer Games U16, a grassroots football tournament involving 28 teams from across the area.
The competition, which got underway on August 14, features 20 male and eight female teams who will contest 52 matches over three weeks at the Ideal Primary School, Tabon-Tabon, and Orile-Agege and Oniwaya High School, both in Agege.
Themed “Rising Stars. Growing Together. One Future,” the tournament carries a total cash prize of N2m, with winners in both the male and female categories sharing in the reward.
Speaking at the official opening ceremony, Obasa said the essence of the competition was to create opportunities for more young talents to express themselves, regardless of skill level, adding that the number of participating teams had grown significantly from the previous edition.
“Sixteen male and four female teams took part in the last edition; this year, we have increased the number to 20 and eight, respectively. It is really grassroots, as the teams will be playing on sand surface pitches,” he said.
He disclosed that one talent discovered through the tournament had since been invited to camp with the national U17 team, the Golden Eaglets, describing it as proof that the initiative was yielding results.
Obasa also revealed plans to establish a community team, Agege City FC, before the end of the year, to be built around players scouted from the Summer Games, joining the ranks of other Lagos-based outfits such as Ikorodu City, Inter Lagos, Sporting Lagos and Eko United.
“For us at the Agege Local Government, sports development is the gateway for a lot of talents to express themselves and make life and career decisions,” he said.
