“Religion fucked up my life…” — Man recounts how church rejected his parents’ marriage

A man has opened up about how a church’s decision to reject his parents’ marriage after discovering his mother was pregnant before their wedding continues to affect him years later.

The man said his parents had become pregnant with him before getting married, with his mother already two months pregnant when they approached the church to formalise their union.

According to him, the church committee noticed his mother’s pregnancy and refused to marry the couple, forcing his mother to return to her parents and raise the child without his father.

Man questions church’s decision

He said his father eventually returned to the same church two years later and got married “properly”, a development that has made the situation particularly difficult for him.

The man said his father now appears on television preaching about God’s love, despite allegedly being largely absent from his childhood and providing little support.

He said, “Makes me want to throw up, I don’t like being around him. Not hate exactly I just grew up with only my mum, he wasn’t there and barely helped.”

He further described the emotions he experiences whenever he sees his father, saying, “Every time I see his face I get this mix of anger and emptiness I still don’t know why I feel like that after all these years.”

Man questions what church was protecting

Reflecting on the experience, the man questioned why his parents were prevented from marrying when they were reportedly already willing to take responsibility for their child.

He asked, “At what point does pregnancy stop two people who already want to take responsibility from getting married? What was the church protecting?”

The account has raised questions about religious rules, premarital pregnancy, family responsibility and the long-term consequences decisions made by religious institutions can have on families and children.
