2027: Why Peter Obi Cannot Become President — Dino Melaye

African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Dino Melaye has argued that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi cannot win the Nigerian presidency, describing him as a “regional champion” rather than a national political figure.

Speaking on the KAA Truths podcast, Melaye said the ability to build broad national support would be crucial in the 2027 presidential election. He argued that Atiku Abubakar, the ADC presidential candidate, has a stronger chance because he is, in his view, a nationalist with wider political appeal.

Melaye acknowledged that his comments about Obi might sound controversial or offensive, stressing that he respects Obi personally and considers him a good man. However, he maintained that Obi’s political support base remains too concentrated in a particular region to secure the presidency.

He drew a comparison with the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whom he described as an exceptional and cosmopolitan leader. Melaye argued that Awolowo’s regional political identity limited his ability to win nationwide presidential contests despite his strong support in the Southwest.

The ADC chieftain therefore maintained that Nigeria’s presidency requires a candidate capable of building a broad national coalition rather than relying predominantly on regional support.
