Presidency Slams Obi’s Unity Pledge as “Sentimental Nothings”

Presidential aide Fredrick Nwabufo has dismissed NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi’s pledge to unite Nigeria, describing his recent interview as empty of substance.

Nwabufo, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Public Engagement, said Obi offered no concrete plan despite promising to bridge the country’s divisions if elected in 2027.

“Peter Obi’s interview shows him again to be vacant of deep thought, understanding of governance, and taken up by syrupy rhetoric,” Nwabufo said in a statement. “He still has no plan, no alternative, and no policy plank, beyond a mouthful of sentimental nothings.”

He said Obi’s unity pledge relied only on citing his running mate and household staff as northerners, without addressing the deeper mechanics of national cohesion.

“His utterances, actions, and those of his followers have but deepened the chasm,” Nwabufo said.

According to Nwabufo, national unity rests on three pillars: inclusive governance, economic integration, and equitable citizenship. He argued these cannot be separated from how leadership distributes resources and opportunity.

“To strengthen national unity is to ensure that public resources are delivered to all citizens regardless of faith, ethnicity, or social standing, and that the government is fair and just to all,” he said.

Nwabufo credited the Tinubu administration with meeting that standard, saying all six geopolitical zones have benefited equally from government programmes and projects.

He also pointed to the appointment of young professionals into strategic government roles as evidence of inclusive governance under Tinubu.

“For the first time in the evolution of Nigeria, young people are superintending strategic sectors of government,” he said.
