“I prayed to God that my grave shouldn’t be in the forest” – Abducted Oyo principal recounts harrowing ordeal in kidnappers’ den

Mrs Alamu, the principal of the school abducted by bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, has emotionally recounted how she survived weeks in captivity, revealing that she constantly prayed not to die in the forest.

Speaking during a thanksgiving testimony in church alongside her family, the school principal described the seventh week of their captivity as the most terrifying, saying heavy military bombardments left them fearing they would be hit by missiles before the bandits could harm them.

According to her, the kidnappers became furious after learning that the government had allegedly promised their release but failed to fulfil it. She recalled being summoned by the camp commander, who threatened to kill one of the captives.

“The seventh week was the hardest for us all. The commander called me and said, ‘See what your government has done. I’m going to kill one of you today.’ I just fell on the ground crying and begging him,” she said.

Mrs Alamu said they later heard the sound of shovels, making everyone believe another captive was about to be buried. However, the bandits instead ordered them to move to another camp after fearing they had been discovered.

She added that throughout the ordeal, she prayed she would not die in the forest and thanked God for preserving her despite falling seriously ill in captivity.

“I told God that my grave should not be numbered in the forest. At one point, I became seriously ill, but after taking two tablets of paracetamol, it was as if I had never been sick. The release was miraculous,” she added.

Her testimony moved members of the congregation, many of whom praised God for preserving the lives of the victims and bringing them home safely after the traumatic experience.
