Nigerian singer Teni Apata, popularly known as Teni, has come under criticism on social media after adding the national honour Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) to her public profile, despite previously making remarks that were widely interpreted as critical of the administration of late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The criticism followed a post on X in which a user accused the singer of hypocrisy, alleging that she had earlier disrespected Buhari after receiving the national honour, but had now begun using the MON title alongside her name.

The post juxtaposed screenshots labelled “Before” and “After”, suggesting that Teni’s public profile had been updated to include the national honour.
Teni was among several Nigerians conferred with national honours by the Buhari administration in recognition of their contributions in various fields.
The singer has not publicly responded to the criticism at the time of filing this report.
The development has sparked mixed reactions online, with some users questioning her decision to adopt the title, while others argued that receiving a national honour is a recognition by the Nigerian state rather than an endorsement of any particular administration.
