Court Remands Anambra Native Doctor in Correctional Centre
The Anambra State High Court sitting in Awka has ordered the remand of a Nnewi-based native doctor, Ikechukwu Ezenagu, popularly known as Muomiri Afuluanya, at the Amawbia Correctional Centre pending the determination of his bail application.
Ezenagu was arraigned before the court presided over by Justice Jude Obiora and was brought to the proceedings from a hospital where he had reportedly been receiving medical attention.
During the hearing, counsel to the defendant, Barrister Kingsley Awuka, applied for bail on health grounds. He also appealed to the court to allow his client remain in the hospital until the next adjourned date, citing concerns about his medical condition.
However, the prosecuting counsel, Barrister Tobechukwu Nweke, opposed the application and urged the court to remand the defendant while awaiting a ruling on the bail motion.
In his ruling, Justice Obiora held that a hospital is not a constitutionally recognized facility for the detention of a defendant facing trial. Consequently, the court ordered that Ezenagu be remanded at the Amawbia Correctional Centre.
The case was subsequently adjourned to June 19, 2026, for further proceedings and consideration of the bail application.
The ruling marks another significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings involving the Nnewi-based native doctor.
