BREAKING: 61 Opposition Lawmakers Nominate Ugochinyere for House Minority Leader Position

A total of 61 out of the 81 opposition members in the House of Representatives have reportedly endorsed Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere as the next Minority Leader following the defection of Hon. Kingsley Chinda from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmakers conveyed their decision in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, urging the House leadership to recognize Ugochinyere as the new leader of the opposition caucus.

The signatories to the nomination letter are said to be drawn from several opposition parties, including the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party (LP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Action Peoples Party (APP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Accord Party.

Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato Federal Constituency of Imo State and currently serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream), is considered the frontrunner for the position following the endorsement by the majority of opposition lawmakers.

However, indications have emerged that some lawmakers are opposed to his nomination and are reportedly backing Hon. Frederick Agbedi, who represents the Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, for the position.

Those opposed to Ugochinyere’s emergence argue that he belongs to the APP, one of the smallest parties in the House with only two members. They also contend that since the position became vacant following the exit of Kingsley Chinda, who hails from the South-South geopolitical zone, it would be appropriate for the next Minority Leader to emerge from the same region.

With the opposition caucus appearing divided over the issue, attention is now focused on Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and the House leadership, who will determine whether the nomination submitted by the 61 lawmakers will be formally recognised.

The development is expected to shape the leadership structure of the opposition bloc in the House of Representatives and could have significant implications for legislative politics in the National Assembly.
