President Bola Tinubu has assented to a bill converting the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, into the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna.

The development is expected to strengthen technical and vocational education, expand access to higher education and improve skills development in Nigeria.

The announcement was made by Daniel Amos, the lawmaker representing Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on House Services.

Amos said the conversion would create more opportunities for students while repositioning technical education to meet the country’s growing technological and industrial needs.

He explained that the new university would promote skills acquisition, expand academic programmes and contribute to national development by producing graduates with practical knowledge and relevant professional skills.

The legislation was sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas. It repeals the existing law establishing the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, and provides for its conversion into the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna.

According to Amos, the transformation would strengthen the institution’s capacity to offer degree programmes, improve research activities and equip students with the skills required in the labour market.

He commended Abbas for sponsoring the bill, describing the Speaker’s efforts as a demonstration of purposeful leadership and commitment to educational development.

Amos also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for signing the legislation into law. He noted that the President had equally assented to the bill establishing the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies in Yaba, Lagos, which was also sponsored by the Speaker.

He described the President’s decision as a reflection of his administration’s commitment to educational reforms and human capital development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The lawmaker congratulated the people of Kaduna State, as well as the management, staff and students of the former Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, on the institution’s new status.

He expressed optimism that the development would improve access to university education in Kaduna State and neighbouring communities while creating more opportunities for students seeking technical and vocational qualifications.

The conversion is expected to provide a stronger foundation for research, innovation and specialised training, particularly in fields relevant to Nigeria’s technological advancement and industrial growth.

With the new status, the institution is expected to play a greater role in developing skilled professionals who can contribute to economic growth and address the country’s demand for technical expertise.
