THISDAY columnist says Nigerians have the right to oppose Tinubu but warns against violence, intimidation and destruction of campaign materials.

Political commentator Mobolaji Sanusi has called on Nigerians, particularly political actors and protesters in Northern Nigeria, to express their dissatisfaction with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration peacefully and within the confines of the law.

In an opinion article published by THISDAY, titled “About the North’s ‘Tinubu Must Go’,” Sanusi acknowledged that Nigerians have legitimate reasons to be concerned about the economic hardship associated with the Federal Government’s reforms. However, he argued that grievances should not lead to violence, intimidation or the destruction of political campaign materials.

Sanusi’s comments followed reports of planned anti-Tinubu demonstrations in Kano State, including an event that its organiser, lawyer Abba Hikima, said was stopped by the police. Hikima reportedly described the gathering as a non-partisan platform intended to sensitise Nigerians and mobilise voters against Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

The columnist also referenced reported incidents in Kebbi and Borno states involving the destruction of political billboards and vehicles, as well as the arrest of individuals associated with the “Tinubu Must Go” slogan.

Sanusi maintained that Nigerians have constitutional rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association. He nevertheless argued that law enforcement agencies have a responsibility to prevent violence and protect public order.

He further noted that electoral democracy provides citizens with the opportunity to decide whether an incumbent government should remain in office through the ballot box.

On the economic situation, Sanusi acknowledged that Tinubu’s reforms have contributed to hardships experienced by Nigerians, including himself. He also noted that the President has consistently defended the policies as necessary for the country’s long-term interests.

The writer questioned whether opposition figures seeking to replace Tinubu had presented sufficiently distinct and realistic alternatives to the administration’s economic policies. However, he maintained that the President must be held accountable for his government’s decisions and their consequences.

Sanusi concluded by urging political opponents and supporters of the President to respect one another’s rights, stressing that opposition to Tinubu should not become a justification for preventing his supporters from campaigning.
