Rangers vs MC Alger: CAF, NFF silence cast shadows on return led amid damaged facilities

Two goals from Kenneth Igboke and James Emo gave Enugu Rangers the win against the North African side as both teams finished the match with 10 men.
The outcome of the match gives the Flying Antelopes a strong advantage ahead of Friday’s return leg in Algeria.
On Monday, Enugu Rangers wrote a petition to the Confederation of African Football, CAF, over the incident, raising the matter ahead of the decisive return leg in Algeria on Friday.
The Nigerian team raised concerns regarding the reported “destruction of a stadium entrance gate, unauthorised entry without payment of gate fees, vandalisation of stadium seats and other acts of disorder.”
In its petition, Enugu Rangers also requested “urgent intervention by CAF, including consideration of appropriate precautionary measures” ahead of the return fixture in Algiers.
As of the time of this report, both CAF and the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, have kept mum on the petition and the reported destruction.
Neither body has issued a public statement on the incident or on any measures being considered before the second leg.
The silence leaves unresolved questions over possible disciplinary action, security arrangements for Friday’s match and how Enugu Rangers’petition will be handled.
Enugu Rangers’ 2–0 win remains the headline result on the pitch, but off it, damaged seats, the club’s petition, and the lack of an official response have turned the encounter into a broader test of security and accountability in continental football.
The Nigerian side now carries a two-goal advantage into Friday’s second leg in Algeria, but the off-field controversy has shifted attention from the scoreline to security, discipline and whether CAF or NFF will act before the decisive match.
Speaking with DAILY POST on Monday, Isa Saleh, co-founder of Borno Junior League, gave his view on the development.
“The silence from CAF and the NFF is the biggest problem. I don’t know if they will react before the return leg this Friday,” Saleh said.
“But matters like this need urgent reaction because the silence at the moment leaves room for unanswered safety questions before the decisive return leg.
“I must commend Enugu Rangers for doing the right thing by petitioning CAF, but CAF should at least acknowledge receipt and confirm whether it is investigating before the return leg in Algeria.
“The NFF should also brief Nigerians and push for security assurances for Enugu Rangers in Algeria.
“I believe MC Alger and their fans will do everything possible to ensure they overturn the first-leg defeat.
“At this point, I am just concerned about the safety of the Enugu Rangers players and their officials and the reception they may get when they travel to Algeria for the return leg.”
