The criminal index of the Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts contains a felony case opened in the name Shawn Michael Davis on 13 July 1986. The same case carries another name in the court’s own list of defendant aliases. That second entry is Abiodun, Oluseun, with the middle name Adedapo and a date of birth of 29 May 1960. Adedapo Oluseun Abiodun is the full name of the Governor of Ogun State, and 29 May 1960 is his date of birth.

The court documents on which this report rests were exclusively obtained by SecretsReporters from the Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts. The record is Case F-86-019816. Its state case number is 13-1986-CF-019816-0001-XX. The defendant named on the case is Davis, Shawn Michael, whose recorded date of birth is 22 June 1959. The filing date is 13 July 1986. The arrest date is also recorded as 13 July 1986, and the arresting agency is Coral Gables. Judge Carlos Humberto Gamez presided over the case. The defence is recorded as a court appointed public defender. The index flags the defendant as being in jail. The case was closed on 16 July 1987.

His lawyers, Afe Babalola and Co, denied in 2022 that he ever bore the name Davis. The denial followed SaharaReporters’ March 2022 publication of police derived papers alleging a 1986 Miami jail episode under the name Shawn Michael Davis or Davids. The published account placed an arrest in November 1986. The court record places the arrest and filing on 13 July 1986.

The alias on the case is not drawn from an opposition petition, a police paper circulated by a political group, or a document tendered by an election petitioner. It is held in the criminal index maintained by the Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts. The Davis entry and the Abiodun entry are attached to the same case number, the same judge, the same filing date and the same closed felony file. The Abiodun entry supplies the governor’s first, middle and surname in the order Abiodun, Oluseun Adedapo, and it supplies the exact birth date by which his public biography is known. Searches of the clerk’s defendant index under Adedapo Abiodun, Dapo Abiodun and Davids returned no defendant record. The case sits under Davis, Shawn Michael, while the governor’s identity is carried in its alias list.

The charges recorded against the defendant were forgery, grand theft in the second degree, uttering a forged instrument, petit theft, resisting an officer with violence, theft of a credit card, and a felony credit card count involving an amount above the statutory threshold. The forgery, grand theft, uttering, petit theft and resisting counts account for five of the seven charges. The clerk’s disposition for each of those five counts is NOLLE PROS-COMP PTI, the entry used where the prosecution discontinues a charge after the defendant completes a pre-trial intervention programme. The credit card theft count is marked NO ACTION. The felony credit card count is also marked NO ACTION. The court record carries no conviction.

The sequence matters because the public argument since 2022 has moved between a denial of the Davis name and a separate denial of conviction. The April 2022 response admitted an arrest in the alternative and denied that he had been convicted. Peoples Gazette reported in May 2022 that it had obtained Miami police files through an opposition backed group. Those files were police paperwork. No court case number, alias record or charge by charge disposition accompanied them.

The issue returned in court in Nigeria in 2023, when the Peoples Democratic Party tendered alleged jail records before the Ogun State election petition tribunal. The tribunal held on 30 September 2023 that the petitioners had not proved that the fingerprints on the material before it belonged to Governor Abiodun. It also held that they had not linked him to the name Shawn Michael. The material now produced by the Miami-Dade criminal index is of a different character from the exhibits rejected at that tribunal. It is a court index entry for a numbered felony case, and the link to the governor is written inside the case itself through the alias defendant list.

The official record also corrects details that have circulated since the allegation first appeared. The case does not place the arrest in November 1986. It records 13 July 1986 as both the arrest date and the filing date. It records the arresting agency as Coral Gables, not as a November operation built around another encounter. It records the defendant’s release position as none and the jail position as yes. It identifies the judge and records the defence as a public defender appointment. It gives a closing date thirteen months after the filing date. No hearings are listed in the online index, and no docket entries are displayed.

Another document relied upon in the 2022 reporting requires a narrower description than it received. Miami-Dade Official Records CFN 2015 R 534571, at Book 29743, Page 1170, was recorded on 18 August 2015 and was presented as a redaction touching Governor Abiodun’s criminal record. The clerk’s index describes the instrument as a DADE COURT PAPER. It names Abiodun Oluwaseun and Clarke Ogugua Kaamilya and references the identifier 2015-016196-FC-04. The index does not reference Case F-86-019816 or any other 1986 criminal case. The document image is withheld from the public website under Florida family law redaction rules, and SecretsReporters makes no claim about the contents of the paper itself. The index establishes only the parties, the document type, the recording date and the reference it carries.

Governor Abiodun was born on 29 May 1960. He was educated in Nigeria and in the United States, and his public biography places his business administration degree from Kennesaw State University in 1986, the year the Miami case was opened. He later worked as a cost accountant with Glock Inc in Georgia from 1989 to 1991. He returned to Nigeria, built Heyden Petroleum, and became Governor of Ogun State on 29 May 2019.

The clerk’s index states that the file location for Case F-86-019816 is DESTROYED. Docket images for criminal cases from before July 2004 are not available online. What remains available is the index itself. It preserves one felony case number, the name Shawn Michael Davis, the alias Abiodun, Oluseun Adedapo, the birth date 29 May 1960, seven charges, the judge, the arresting agency, the filing and closing dates, and the recorded disposition of every count.
