2027: Politicians Taking Nigerians for Granted, Ndume Warns

Borno South Senator Urges APC and Opposition Parties to Focus on Policies, Governance and Solutions to Nigeria’s Challenges
Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has warned that Nigerian politicians risk taking citizens for granted by prioritising political personalities and power struggles over policies that address the country’s challenges.
Ndume gave the warning during an interview on Arise News while discussing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) senator expressed concern that political debates were increasingly centred on individuals rather than concrete proposals for improving the lives of Nigerians.
“I think the politicians are taking the Nigerian people or the public for granted. It’s my fear. I’m so scared of it,” he said.
Ndume Criticises Personality-Driven Politics
The senator argued that political parties should clearly explain their programmes, policy priorities and plans for addressing issues affecting the country instead of concentrating on attacks against political opponents.
He said opposition parties often focus heavily on President Bola Tinubu rather than presenting detailed alternatives to his administration’s policies.
Ndume also mentioned the African Democratic Congress (ADC), observing that discussions surrounding the party frequently centred on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar rather than its policy agenda and identity.
According to him, political competition should provide Nigerians with meaningful choices based on ideas, governance plans and practical solutions.
APC Must Communicate Its Achievements
Ndume also turned his attention to the ruling APC, expressing concern that those responsible for promoting the Tinubu administration were not doing enough to communicate its achievements to the public.
“We have a product. The marketers are not honest,” he said, suggesting that some party officials appeared more concerned about their personal interests than effectively presenting the government’s record.
He further questioned the sincerity of some APC members whose public displays of loyalty, according to him, might not reflect their private positions.
The senator warned that political parties risk losing public trust if they fail to demonstrate sincerity, accountability and a clear commitment to addressing citizens’ concerns.
As the 2027 elections approach, Ndume urged politicians across party lines to shift their attention from personality-based contests to substantive discussions about governance, economic challenges and policies capable of improving Nigerians’ lives.
