Nigerian broadcaster Rufai Oseni has criticised cleric Primate Elijah Ayodele over his position on the continued withholding of United States documents linked to a past drug investigation involving President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking during a debate on ARISE News, Rufai argued that President Tinubu should support the release of any relevant documents rather than seek to prevent their disclosure, saying this could help address public concerns surrounding the matter.

According to Rufai, making the records public would give Tinubu an opportunity to clear the air and respond directly to allegations and public speculation.

“For the interest of sincerity, it is best that he is even the one not getting lawyers to be able to quash the process, but championing it to say, okay, release whatever they have of me so that I’ll be able to show to the world that it is not what a lot of people think,” Rufai said.

Reacting to Primate Ayodele’s reported position on the issue, Rufai questioned why a religious leader would support the withholding of information concerning matters involving a country’s leader.

He argued that the controversy goes beyond President Tinubu as an individual and could have implications for Nigeria’s image internationally.

Rufai maintained that transparency was necessary to address the controversy, stressing that the actions and public record of a country’s leader could affect how citizens are perceived both within and outside Nigeria.

He added that the matter raises broader questions about morality, integrity and the strength of national institutions.
