Peter Obi Meets Canadian High Commissioner Over Nigeria’s 2027 Elections

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has met with Canada’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, to discuss Nigeria’s forthcoming elections and efforts to strengthen the country’s democratic institutions.

Obi disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday following a meeting with Salvaggio and members of his team at the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria.

According to Obi, discussions during the meeting focused largely on Nigeria’s upcoming elections and Canada’s continued support for efforts aimed at strengthening democratic processes and institutions in the country.

The meeting also covered issues relating to trade and investment, economic development, education and the need for affirmative measures to increase women’s participation and representation in politics.

Obi said he reiterated his belief that a well-governed, peaceful, stable and prosperous Nigeria would be in Canada’s strategic interest while creating opportunities for stronger partnerships between both countries and the wider African continent.

He added that a Nigeria that works effectively for its citizens would be better positioned to unlock its economic potential and attract deeper international investment and partnerships.

The NDC presidential candidate also stressed the importance of strengthening democratic institutions and increasing citizens’ participation in governance.

According to him, Nigeria needs a political system that gives every citizen, regardless of gender, background or circumstances, a meaningful opportunity to participate in the governance of the country.

Obi further expressed his willingness to maintain engagement with Canada’s diplomatic and business communities, saying such interactions could help build partnerships capable of contributing to a more prosperous, secure and inclusive Nigeria.

The meeting comes as political activities and discussions surrounding the 2027 general elections continue to intensify, with increasing attention being placed on the credibility of the electoral process, democratic institutions and wider political participation.
