Former British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced plans to step down as Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras, paving the way for a by-election in the London constituency.
Starmer made the announcement in a statement to the Camden New Journal on Tuesday, ending weeks of speculation over whether he would remain in the House of Commons after leaving office as prime minister.
He described his 11-year representation of the constituency as a “huge honour and privilege”, but said he was now ready to hand over the seat to a successor.
“I will now focus on other things and that will be international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world,” Starmer said.

He also said he intended to continue his campaign against violence against women and girls, an issue he had worked on before entering Parliament.
“I will also continue, as I have done for a long time now with others, to work on combating violence against women and girls; that is an issue that matters to me hugely,” he said.
“It’s work I started before I became an MP and it’s work I’m keen to continue after I’m an MP. So international affairs on the one hand, and continuing my work on violence against women and girls on the other.”
Starmer’s decision comes despite his earlier indication that he would remain an MP until the next general election.
In a BBC interview shortly after stepping down as prime minister, he had said he intended to continue representing Holborn and St Pancras.
However, in his latest statement, Starmer said he was now prepared to “pass the baton to a successor”.
His announcement came hours before former Prime Minister Andy Burnham was due to make his first statement in the House of Commons as prime minister, outlining his priorities and responding to questions from MPs.
A date for the by-election will not be fixed until Starmer formally resigns his Commons seat.
Holborn and St Pancras has traditionally been a Labour stronghold, with Starmer retaining the constituency with a majority of more than 11,000 votes in the 2024 general election.
