Ambassador Ibrahim Hails Nigeria’s Fighting Spirit After Dramatic Comeback Against DR Congo

Nigeria’s thrilling comeback victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo at the 2026 African Women’s Volleyball Championship in Nairobi, Kenya, has drawn praise from Nigeria’s High Commissioner-Designate to Kenya, Ambassador Danlami Ibrahim, who described the performance as a true representation of the Nigerian spirit.

The Nigerian women’s volleyball team recovered from two sets down to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over DR Congo in Tuesday’s 9th-12th classification match.

Nigeria lost the opening two sets 25-20 and 25-22 before mounting an impressive fightback to win the remaining sets 25-21, 25-13 and 15-13.

The performance left Ambassador Ibrahim delighted as he applauded the determination and resilience displayed by the Nigerian players.

“I’m highly elated. To come back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, that is the stuff Nigeria is made of. You underrate Nigeria at your own peril,” Ibrahim said after the match.

The high commissioner-designate said the team has continued to show encouraging progress throughout the championship, particularly after suffering a 3-0 defeat to hosts Kenya in their opening match.

“These girls have shown tremendous determination. From the game, which they lost 3-0 to Kenya, they bounced back to win two consecutive matches,” he said.

Ibrahim also expressed optimism about the future of the Nigerian side, describing the squad as young and promising.

“It’s a young and promising team, so I believe they have a bright future ahead,” he added.

The ambassador also appealed to Nigerians living in Kenya to come out in large numbers to support the team in its final match of the championship.

While expressing concern over the level of support at previous matches, Ibrahim urged members of the Nigerian community to make an effort to cheer the players on as they prepare to conclude their campaign.

“They should please come out and cheer on the team. Nigerians here in Kenya should come out in numbers,” Ibrahim appealed.

“The turnout so far has not been very impressive, perhaps because of work commitments, but I want to appeal to them to make the effort to come out for the final game and cheer the team to victory.”

He further disclosed that plans were being made to host a celebration for the Nigerian team and members of the Nigerian community in Kenya after the final match.

“Afterwards, we will have a Nigerian party for the team and Nigerians here in Kenya,” he said.
