“We’re Not Spoiled” – Dangote ‘s Daughters Open Up On Proving Themselves

The daughters of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, have pushed back against any suggestion that their privileged upbringing softened the demands placed on them, insisting they have had to work as hard as anyone else to earn their place within the Dangote Group.

Halima, Fatima and Mariya Dangote, who all hold senior roles within their father’s business empire, made the disclosure in a conversation with Bloomberg Next Africa, portions of which circulated widely on Saturday.

Halima, speaking for the trio, said the sisters had deliberately chosen a low-key approach to public life, allowing their professional output rather than their surname to do the talking. “We’re not spoiled,” she said plainly, adding that the sisters tended to downplay what they owned or where they came from whenever they mingled with other children from wealthy homes.

She said the sisters placed far greater value on the strength of their work and the performance of their businesses than on any public applause that came their way. “Our growth, we’re growing N100 billion. We are all in those key positions. And I mean, numbers don’t lie,” she said, pointing to results as the truest measure of their contribution.

Halima also spoke candidly about the layered scrutiny that trails them as young Muslim women from northern Nigeria occupying positions of authority within a major conglomerate. She noted that people were often quick to assume their roles were handed to them rather than earned. “The first thing anybody would think is, because it’s a right and it’s never a right, it’s a privilege,” she said, before breaking down the specific biases they contend with. “I think three key things play into our roles. We are young Muslim women. We are from the North, which is not the norm to work all the time. And we look younger. I think, according to people, we look younger than our ages. So we have to prove our age, our worth.”

The sisters maintained that their standing within the Dangote Group came attached to real responsibility, requiring them to win the trust and respect of colleagues rather than assume it. They also revealed that they kept a relatively modest social media footprint, using their platforms to reflect their personalities rather than court attention.

Beyond their present roles, Halima said the sisters were keen on opening up more opportunities for women within their father’s organisation, drawing on lessons from their own journeys. “All three of us were not expressive of what we have or what we own or what we’re doing,” she said. “I think, as Fatima and Mariya said, the results speak for themselves – the sale of this business, the profit of this, our growth. We are all in those key positions and, I mean, numbers don’t lie.”

Their remarks come as the Dangote Group continues to shape its leadership succession structure, with the patriarch himself hinting at the possibility of one of his daughters eventually stepping into his shoes. “I think, yes, I can see one of them. I’ve been watching all of them, so I can definitely see one of the three that can actually lead,” Dangote had earlier said.
