Former Senator Shehu Sani has opposed any move to privatise or concession King’s College, Lagos, describing the institution as a national treasure and a cradle of excellence.

Sani, in a statement on the issue, said the prestigious Federal Government school should remain a public institution, while urging its Old Boys to continue supporting efforts to upgrade its facilities and maintain its standards.

He said many former students of the school, who came from wealthy, middle-class and less privileged backgrounds, had gone on to become chief executives, influential professionals and prominent figures in society.

According to him, the Old Boys have a responsibility to give back to the institution that helped shape their lives.

“King’s College Lagos is a national treasure and cradle of excellence. It should not be privatised or handed over as concession,” Sani said.

He acknowledged the contributions of the school’s Old Boys to its development, saying their efforts should be encouraged and expanded.

Sani argued that the school’s challenges could be addressed through collaboration between the Federal Government, the Old Boys Association and other stakeholders without transferring ownership or control of the institution to private interests.

He also recalled the school’s historic role in providing education to children from different social backgrounds.

“The Old Boys, who were the children of the rich, the middle class and the poor, and now CEOs and powerful men, should continue to give back and upgrade the school,” he said.

While acknowledging that the Old Boys were “trying their best”, Sani called for the preservation of the institution’s public character.

“But let Pro Unitate be,” he added, using the school’s Latin motto, meaning “For Unity.”
