Sanwo-Olu Orders 160 New Compactors to Tackle Lagos Waste Crisis

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered immediate measures to address recent delays in waste collection across the state, saying the accumulation of refuse in parts of Lagos is unacceptable.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed this in a post on X after inspecting waste management operations at the Olusosun dumpsite, where he said the state government was taking direct action to resolve the challenges affecting waste collection.

The governor said, “We were out at the Olusosun dumpsite to inspect our waste management operations firsthand. I know the collection delays across Lagos over the past few weeks have been frustrating and seeing waste piled up is unacceptable. We are taking direct action to fix this.”

He said the state government was “leveling and expanding access roads at our five major dumpsites” to enable waste trucks to dump and turn around without delays.

Sanwo-Olu also announced the acquisition of 160 new compactors to strengthen the state’s waste collection fleet, while development partners are expected to provide additional heavy-duty equipment.

According to him, the government is also restructuring the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to ensure stricter oversight of waste management operations.

He said, “We are restructuring LAWMA to ensure stricter oversight on the ground and we are working with the PSP operators to clean up their operations and ensure only capable and committed teams are on our roads.”

The governor said the state was also planning long-term infrastructure projects to modernise waste management, including the construction of two major Transfer Loading Stations at Olusosun and Solous 3.

He added that Material Recovery Facilities would also be constructed in Epe and Badagry to improve waste sorting and recycling.

Sanwo-Olu said, “We are fixing the system from the ground up but keeping Lagos clean requires effort from all of us.”

He warned residents against indiscriminate dumping of waste on streets, stressing that environmental enforcement officers would arrest and prosecute offenders.

“Indiscriminate dumping on our streets will not be tolerated and environmental enforcement officers will arrest and prosecute offenders,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu assured Lagos residents that the government was working to resolve the current challenges and improve waste management across the state.

“We are on it and you will see the difference soon,” he said.
