The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in collaboration with other security agencies, has arrested 13 persons suspected of vandalising high-tension electricity cables in Borno State.

The suspects were reportedly apprehended after attempting to flee upon sighting security operatives. A quantity of aluminium cables believed to have been removed from electricity infrastructure was also recovered.

The Borno State NSCDC Commandant, Ahmed Bello Gaya, said the Corps would continue to work with other security agencies to clamp down on criminal activities and protect critical infrastructure across the state.

The development comes amid concerns over the impact of electricity infrastructure vandalism on efforts to improve power supply in Borno.

The General Manager of the Borno State Rural Electrification Board, Shettima Bukar, said the state government had invested billions of naira in procuring and deploying electricity infrastructure to expand access to power across communities.

He said the activities of vandals were undermining these investments and frustrating efforts to provide reliable electricity to residents.

The NSCDC has also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies, stressing that security is a shared responsibility.

The Corps warned criminal gangs and their collaborators to desist from vandalising public infrastructure, saying anyone found involved would face the full weight of the law.
