3. The Guardian in its lead report takes a closer look at the second stage of the constitutional amendment process with the bill now before the 36 State assemblies and role of the governors in the success or otherwise of the process.
Nigeria’s long-running quest for State Police has entered a decisive phase, with the National Assembly transmitting the Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, to all 36 State Houses of Assembly for concurrence.
The move brings the proposed restructuring of the country’s policing system to the states, where at least 24 of the 36 assemblies must approve the bill for the constitutional amendment to proceed.
The state-level deliberations are expected to focus on the structure, powers, funding and accountability of the proposed State Police, as well as its relationship with the Nigeria Police Force.
The move comes against the backdrop of renewed calls for decentralised policing following years of worsening insecurity, including kidnapping, banditry, communal violence and other forms of criminality that have tested the capacity of the centralised police system.

Tinubu: ICC victory removed biggest legal hurdle to Mambilla hydropower project
President Bola Tinubu says Nigeria’s victory over Sunrise Power at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris, France, shows that the country “will not succumb to the predatory and exploitative claims” of local and international entities.
In a statement he signed, Tinubu said Nigeria would continue to defend its commonwealth against any form of “opportunistic claims”.
Earlier on Thursday, the ICC in Paris ruled in favour of Nigeria in the $2.35 billion award sought by Sunrise Power over the Mambilla hydropower project.
The tribunal dismissed Sunrise’s claim that Nigeria breached its contractual obligations under the settlement agreement and the addendum.
It also directed Sunrise and its promoter to refund Nigeria’s legal fees of $11.8 million.
Reacting to the ruling, Tinubu commended two former Nigerian presidents — Olusegun Obasanjo and the late Muhammadu Buhari — for testifying during the case.
