NDC Crisis: Babachir Lawal Accuses Binani of Backing Atiku

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has accused the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Adamawa State, Aisha Binani, of supporting African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar amid a dispute over Lawal’s leadership role in the NDC.

Lawal, who recently joined the NDC, made the allegation in a post on his official Facebook page on Monday.

His comments followed opposition from six NDC governorship candidates in the North-East to his reported appointment as the party’s leader in the region. The candidates have said they do not recognise Lawal in the position.

Reacting to the development, Lawal alleged that Binani was behind the protest and claimed that she was supporting Atiku rather than the NDC presidential ticket involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Lawal also said the NDC governorship candidates in Gombe and Taraba had contacted him to distance themselves from the statement rejecting his appointment.

Describing the protest as a “charade,” Lawal alleged that it was being organised by what he described as a “female pretender” to the Adamawa governorship candidacy.

He said the disagreement did not concern him and should instead be addressed by the national leadership of the party.

Lawal further stated that he neither requested the position nor received a formal offer before the announcement of his appointment.

He said he accepted the appointment in good faith as a mark of respect for Senator Dickson, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, whom he said he respected.

The allegations against Binani and the other candidates remain disputed, and the reported disagreement highlights an emerging internal dispute within the NDC over its leadership structure in the North-East ahead of the 2027 elections.
