“Minimum wage in Nigeria is ₦70k” – Isaac Fayose tackles Okpebholo over UK petrol comparison

Businessman and social commentor Isaac Fayose has criticised Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo over his comparison of petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom (UK).

Okpebholo recently revealed that he bought petrol during a trip to London and discovered that it cost about ₦3,000 per litre, compared with the roughly ₦1,500 Nigerians were paying at the time, urging Nigerians to be grateful.

Reacting to his video, Fayose challenged the relevance of comparing the two prices without considering the broader economic conditions in both countries.

“See Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, making mockery of himself. According to him, he travelled to London. He said someone took him to a petrol station to go and buy petrol. And when he got there, he realised that petrol in UK is ₦3,000 a litre compared to petrol in Nigeria, which is ₦1,500.

So he is coming back home from UK with good news for you, to tell you that your own petrol is cheaper than the petrol in UK, forgetting to think,” he said.

Fayose further argued that workers’ income should also be considered when assessing the cost of petrol in both countries.

“Forgetting to think that minimum wage in Nigeria is ₦70,000. That means in a month, with your salary in Nigeria, minimum wage, you can only buy 49 litres of petrol. But minimum wage in UK is £13 to £15 an hour. That means in a month in UK, you can make up to £2,000, which is about ₦4 million.

In UK, there’s free medical, the roads are good, there’s 24 hours light and security, but he didn’t factor all those ones,” he added.

Fayose’s comments have sparked reactions online, with some debating whether petrol prices should be considered alongside income and living costs.
