Meet 15-year-old JJ Gabriel, who could become Man Utd’s youngest-ever player

Manchester United’s teenage forward JJ Gabriel is attracting growing attention after a series of impressive performances that have raised questions about how soon he could make his competitive first-team debut.

At just 15, Gabriel has already trained regularly with the senior squad and featured during Manchester United’s pre-season preparations, giving him an early taste of life around the first team.

According to BBC Sport on Wednesday, United head coach Michael Carrick has been careful not to rush the youngster, while acknowledging the enormous talent he possesses.

“JJ is one of the boys. He’s obviously got a really big talent. He’s trained with us quite a bit and is getting experience all the time.

“He’s physically adapting to each step, and we’re just continuing his development,” Carrick said

Gabriel’s performances at Premier League 2 level have demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in the club’s academy.

On his Premier League 2 debut against Ipswich at Leigh Sports Village, Gabriel produced an audacious finish after running on to Jack Fletcher’s through ball.

He controlled the pace of the pass with his left foot before using his right to scoop the ball over the advancing goalkeeper from the edge of the area.

A week later, he produced another eye-catching goal against Leicester.

Receiving Tynan Thompson’s short pass with his back to goal inside the penalty area, Gabriel dragged the ball back with his left foot and spun away from his marker.

After showing strength to stay on his feet under pressure, he shifted the ball to his left with his right foot and glided beyond another defender before firing a low shot into the net.

The entire move took less than five seconds, highlighting his balance, strength, technique and composure.

The goal was widely shared on social media and attracted millions of views.

Giggs offers a word of caution

Gabriel’s situation has drawn comparisons with the early career of Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs, who made his first-team debut for the club at the age of 17 in 1991.

Giggs has previously spoken about the importance of patience when managing the development of exceptionally talented young players.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents: The Debrief, Giggs explained that there can be a stage when a youngster believes he is ready for senior football, while the manager believes regular youth-team matches remain more beneficial.

“Sometimes you have to be patient,” Giggs said.

“Sometimes it gets to a point where you can’t pick him and not have him train in the first team; that might be in a month, might be six months, might be a year.”

His comments underline the delicate balance United face in deciding when Gabriel should make the permanent step into senior football.

Could Gabriel break United’s record?

Gabriel has already featured around the first team during pre-season, including an appearance against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm.

He came on as a late substitute and was immediately involved in the action, suffering a challenge from behind by Uruguay captain Jose Maria Gimenez.

United have continued to share footage of Gabriel training with the senior squad, where he has also been seen interacting with fellow forward Benjamin Sesko.

There has been speculation that Gabriel could be handed his competitive debut in the EFL Cup.

If he makes his senior bow before turning 16, he could become Manchester United’s youngest-ever player, surpassing goalkeeper David Gaskell, who was 16 years and 19 days old when he made his debut.

Gabriel turns 16 on October 6.

However, United must decide whether giving him senior exposure at such a young age is the right step, particularly given the demands of the Premier League and the club’s European commitments.

Gabriel will not feature against Sabah FK, as a 15-year-old can only play in the Champions League if included on a club’s 25-man A list. Arsenal used that route with Max Dowman last season, but United did not include Gabriel on their list.

The UEFA Youth League and Premier League 2 therefore remain important platforms for his development.

For now, the teenager’s performances continue to create opportunities for him.
