FG Releases Eight-Month Tools Allowance To Tertiary Institution Lecturers

The Federal Government has released the full payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) for academic staff of federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education covering January to August 2026.
The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, disclosed this on Wednesday shortly after inaugurating the Ministerial Committee on Accreditation.
CATA is designed to support academic staff in procuring essential tools, materials and other resources required for teaching, research and related academic activities.
Alausa said the release was in line with the provisions of the 2025 Federal Government–Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN/ASUU) agreement, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to meeting its obligations under the agreement.
He said all affected institutions had been notified to commence payment to eligible academic staff.
“The Office of the Minister of Education is happy to announce that the full CATA payment has now been released by the Federal Government from January to August 2026 to all universities, all polytechnics and colleges of education.”
The minister added that the corresponding allowance for non-academic staff was also being processed, with the funds expected to be released in the coming weeks.
Alausa said the payment reflected President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare and working conditions of personnel across the tertiary education sector.
He, however, noted that the administration’s education agenda extended beyond staff welfare, with investments also being made in infrastructure across tertiary institutions, as well as basic and postgraduate education.
The minister said the government remained committed to improving the quality of education and ensuring that Nigerian children had access to learning opportunities comparable with global standards.
He added that ongoing reforms and investments were aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s human capital and transforming the education sector.
Alausa commended the President for what he described as a transformative approach to education, assuring that the Federal Government would continue to prioritise staff welfare while investing in infrastructure and institutional development.
