Real Madrid stars Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr and Ibrahim Konaté have attracted attention after refusing to fully take part in a support campaign for the people of Ceuta.
Before Real Madrid’s match against Elche on Tuesday night, the three players refused to properly display a special shirt made for the campaign.
Instead, they rolled up the shirts, making the message difficult to read.
LaLiga organised the campaign during this round of matches to show support for people in Ceuta.
The Spanish exclave faced chaotic scenes at the end of July after around 70,000 migrants, mostly from Morocco, arrived there. More than 100 people reportedly died.
The campaign has caused division in Spanish football.
On Sunday, Barcelona players decided not to wear the special shirts, while their opponents Levante wore them.
Moroccan Real Betis player Abdessamad Ezzalzouli did wear the shirt before his team’s match against Villarreal. His decision led to heavy criticism from some Moroccan supporters on social media.
Ezzalzouli later explained his decision on Instagram, saying his participation “gezien moet worden als een sociaal gebaar en niet als politiek statement”.
Real Madrid supporters also showed their support for Ceuta last week by displaying Ceuta flags before the club’s Champions League match against Inter.
