A 39-year-old Nigerian businessman, Edwin Omokhuale, has been arrested at Dublin Airport in Ireland over his alleged involvement in a fraud case worth about $23 million in the United Kingdom.
Omokhuale, who is reportedly a real estate executive based in Lagos, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon by officers of An Garda Síochána while he was preparing to board a flight to Paris.
His arrest followed a warrant issued by the United Kingdom authorities.
The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) is reportedly seeking Omokhuale in connection with an alleged money laundering case linked to a major fraud involving an Australian mining company in early 2023.
According to reports, the alleged fraud involved approximately $23 million, equivalent to about €19.7 million.
Investigators believe the individuals behind the alleged scheme were operating from the UK and deceived employees of the Australian company into transferring large sums of money into bank accounts controlled by the suspects.
Omokhuale was reportedly living in the UK around the time the alleged fraud occurred.
Following his arrest in Ireland, he was expected to appear before a court in Dublin on Thursday, September 10, as extradition proceedings to return him to the UK commenced.
The allegations against Omokhuale have not been proven in court.
