The Lagos State Government has announced measures to tackle recent delays in waste collection across the state, including the deployment of 160 new waste compactors.
The announcement followed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s inspection of waste management operations at the Olusosun dumpsite.
Sanwo-Olu acknowledged residents’ frustration over waste piling up in parts of Lagos, describing the situation as unacceptable.
“I know the collection delays across Lagos over the past few weeks have been frustrating, and seeing waste piled up is unacceptable. We are taking direct action to fix this.”
He said the government was levelling and expanding access roads at the state’s five major dumpsites.
“We are levelling and expanding access roads at our five major dumpsites so trucks can dump and turn around without delay.”
The governor also announced the deployment of 160 new waste compactors to strengthen collection operations.
“We have ordered 160 new compactors.”
The government said development partners were also providing additional heavy-duty equipment to support waste management operations.
It announced plans to restructure the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) for stricter field oversight and work with Private Sector Participation operators to improve their performance.
The government said only capable and committed operators would be allowed to continue providing waste collection services across the state.
As part of its long-term strategy, it said major Transfer Loading Stations were being constructed at Olusosun and Solous 3, while Material Recovery Facilities were being developed in Epe and Badagry to improve waste sorting and recycling.

The government also warned residents against indiscriminate dumping, saying environmental enforcement officers would arrest and prosecute offenders.
It said the measures were designed to fix Lagos’ waste management system “from the ground up” and improve waste collection across the state.
