Lagos Building Collapses During Demolition, Kills One, Trap Workers

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed that one person died while two others were rescued after a two-storey building undergoing manual demolition collapsed in Aboru, Alimosho area of the state.

The incident occurred at No. 42, Governors Road, Aboru, in the early hours of Thursday, September 10, 2026, prompting a multi-agency rescue operation coordinated by LASEMA.

The agency said its Alpha Eagle Response Team was dispatched from the Cappa, Oshodi LASEMA Response Unit at 12:56 a.m. following a distress call and arrived at the scene within the projected response time.

On arrival, first responders found that the structure had collapsed during demolition activities, trapping workers under the debris.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the building was being manually demolished when the collapse occurred,” LASEMA said.

The agency said it activated the State’s Emergency Response Plan and assumed incident command to coordinate the rescue operation.

“Through a coordinated search and rescue operation, two adult males were extricated alive from the rubble and were promptly administered life-saving first aid by personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, before being moved to a nearby health facility for further medical attention,” the agency said.

“Sadly, one adult male was recovered dead from beneath the collapsed structure. The Agency commiserates with the family of the deceased and prays for the quick recovery of the injured.”

The ongoing operation is being jointly conducted by LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASAMBUS.

LASEMA said the incident area had been cordoned off to protect residents and provide rescue personnel with unhindered access, while community leaders and security agencies were also assisting in the operation.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, reiterated the state government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

He urged members of the public and developers to comply strictly with building regulations and engage only certified professionals for demolition and construction activities.

“Any suspicious or unsafe building activity should be reported immediately to the Agency through the 767 and 112 toll-free emergency numbers,” he said.

LASEMA said the Lagos State Government would continue to invest in capacity building, equipment and the decentralisation of response units to guarantee a 10-minute emergency response time across the state.
