KC Luxury: Court adjourns case as lawyer challenges 30-day detention order

The Federal High Court in Lagos has adjourned proceedings in the case involving the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and socialite Afolabi Kazeem Micheal, popularly known as KC Luxury, to September 21, 2026.

Justice Friday Ogazi adjourned the matter on Wednesday after hearing submissions from Abdulakeem Labi-Lawal, counsel to KC Luxury, and Abu Ibrahim, counsel to the NDLEA.

KC Luxury was arrested by NDLEA operatives on August 13 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, while preparing to travel to Paris.

The agency subsequently linked him to the seizure of 184.5kg of cocaine, which it described as the largest cocaine seizure from a courier company in its history.

According to the NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), the socialite was allegedly found with €7,750, £2,800, N100,000 and expensive jewellery at the time of his arrest.

The agency also arrested Lawal Kehinde, an employee of a logistics company allegedly connected to the consignment.

On August 20, Justice Akintayo Aluko granted the NDLEA an order extending KC Luxury’s detention by 30 days to enable the agency to conduct further investigations into his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

However, on August 27, Justice Ogazi ordered the NDLEA to produce KC Luxury in court after the agency failed to formally charge and arraign him following 14 days in custody.

The order followed an ex parte application filed by Labi-Lawal.

Addressing the court on Wednesday, Labi-Lawal argued that Justice Aluko’s order did not expressly direct the NDLEA to detain his client for the entire 30-day period.

He said the agency could release KC Luxury on bail if it was satisfied with the progress of its investigation.

The lawyer also said his client had challenged the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court to grant the detention order.

According to him, the application challenging the order had already been argued before Justice Aluko, with the parties awaiting the court’s ruling.

He therefore urged Justice Ogazi to adjourn the matter.

Ibrahim, counsel to the NDLEA, did not oppose the application for adjournment.

The NDLEA lawyer told the court that the 30-day remand order was obtained before KC Luxury approached the court seeking an order directing the agency to produce him.

Justice Ogazi subsequently adjourned the matter to September 21 for further proceedings.

KC Luxury had earlier asked Justice Aluko to set aside or discharge the detention order, arguing that no criminal charge had been filed against him.
