FULL LIST: Five players who scored EPL hat-tricks, lost matches

Brian Brobbey has joined a rare group in Premier League history after scoring a hat-trick for Sunderland in their 5-3 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The Dutch striker struck three times as Sunderland repeatedly fought back against Pep Guardiola’s former club, but Erling Haaland’s late goal secured all three points for Manchester City.

According to an Opta Analyst on Sunday and a BBC report on Monday, Brobbey’s treble was the sixth instance in Premier League history of a player scoring a hat-trick while ending the match on the losing side.

He is only the fifth different player to achieve the feat, with Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier having done it twice.

Brobbey’s goals came in the 12th, 33rd and 59th minutes, but City scored through Enzo Fernandez, Rayan Cherki, Antoine Semenyo’s brace and Haaland to claim an eight-goal thriller.

The previous occasion came in December 2007, meaning Brobbey became the first player in 19 years to score a Premier League hat-trick and still finish on the losing side.

1. Matt Le Tissier — Oldham Athletic 4-3 Southampton

May 8, 1993

Le Tissier became the first player to score a Premier League hat-trick in a losing cause during the competition’s inaugural season.

The Southampton forward scored three times at Oldham Athletic, but his goals were not enough as the hosts claimed a 4-3 victory.

2. Matt Le Tissier — Southampton 3-4 Nottingham Forest

August 19, 1995

Two years later, Le Tissier remarkably found himself in the same situation again.

He scored another hat-trick, this time at home against Nottingham Forest, but Southampton suffered a 4-3 defeat.

That made Le Tissier the only player before Brobbey to score hat-tricks in two separate Premier League defeats.

3. Dion Dublin — Sheffield Wednesday 4-3 Coventry City

December 4, 1995

Dion Dublin became the third player to achieve the feat when he scored three times for Coventry City at Sheffield Wednesday.

Coventry nevertheless lost 4-3, just months after Le Tissier had recorded his second hat-trick in a losing cause.

4. Dwight Yorke — Newcastle United 4-3 Aston Villa

September 30, 1996

Aston Villa forward Dwight Yorke then joined the list less than a year later.

Yorke scored a hat-trick at Newcastle United, but Villa were beaten 4-3 in another seven-goal thriller.

5. Roque Santa Cruz — Wigan Athletic 5-3 Blackburn Rovers

December 15, 2007

It took more than 11 years for the feat to occur again.

Blackburn Rovers striker Roque Santa Cruz scored three times against Wigan Athletic, but his hat-trick was overshadowed by Wigan’s 5-3 victory.

Santa Cruz remained the most recent player to score a Premier League hat-trick in a defeat for 19 years.

6. Brian Brobbey — Manchester City 5-3 Sunderland

September 20, 2026

Brobbey ended the long wait at the Etihad.

The Sunderland striker scored three times to twice bring his side level before completing his hat-trick in the 59th minute to make it 4-3.

Sunderland pushed for an equaliser, but Haaland settled the contest in the 81st minute.

Brobbey therefore became the sixth player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick in a match his team lost, and the fifth different player to do so.
