The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has debunked a piece of content circulating online about a government grant to Nigerians, describing it as fake and urging members of the public to disregard it.
In a brief warning issued on Thursday, the apex bank said the material was not authentic.
“This content is FAKE. Let the public be guided,” the CBN said.
The Bank urged Nigerians to exercise caution over information attributed to it and to verify such claims through its official communication channels.
The warning comes amid the circulation of fabricated statements purportedly signed by its governor, Olayemi Cardoso, authorising the alleged transfer of grants to Nigerians to the tune of $46 Billion.
The ‘memo’ authorising the reported grant and its announcement have been widely circulated on Social media leading to the move by the Central Bank to dismiss it as fake content.
Documents like this circulating on social media has led to government institutions increasingly cautioning the public against misleading content falsely presented as official communication.
The CBN advised the public to rely on its verified platforms for accurate information on its policies, decisions and operations.
