Arsenal Beat Sunderland To Move Top Of Premier League Table

Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League after beating Sunderland 2-0 on Saturday, with Bruno Guimaraes scoring a stunning goal moments after David Raya had rescued the visitors with a penalty save.

Sunderland had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the second half after Ezri Konsa was penalised for holding Dan Ballard inside the area.

Enzo Le Fee stepped up to take the resulting penalty, but Raya produced a brilliant save to push the spot-kick onto the post.

Arsenal capitalised almost immediately, with Guimaraes breaking the deadlock just 121 seconds later.

The Brazilian, who was repeatedly booed by the home supporters because of his Newcastle connections, controlled Declan Rice’s pass outside the box before unleashing a powerful strike that flew in off the underside of the crossbar.

Sunderland pushed for an equaliser late on and put Arsenal under sustained pressure, but the visitors held firm to protect their lead.

Arsenal then sealed all three points in stoppage time when Bukayo Saka converted from the penalty spot.

Sunderland’s hopes were effectively ended after Reinildo Mandava was shown a second yellow card for bringing down Saka as the Arsenal forward raced through on goal.

The victory is Arsenal’s fourth consecutive Premier League win and sixth in all competitions.

The result lifts the champions three points clear at the top of the table, with Manchester City set to face Manchester United on Sunday.
