First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has appealed to voters in the South-East to support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.

Mrs Tinubu made the appeal in Owerri, Imo State, while speaking at a women’s empowerment programme organised through the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals.

She said her desire for the President’s re-election was driven by her hope of seeing a prosperous Nigeria in her later years.

“Make una vote for Mr President, we go work for una and Nigeria go better,” she told the gathering.

The First Lady also said she wanted to “enjoy Nigeria at old age.”

The empowerment programme is targeting 18,500 women across the country, with beneficiaries receiving equipment to support their businesses.

In the South-East, 500 women from each of the five states were presented with business equipment, including generators, grinding machines, gas cylinders and industrial ovens.

In Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodimma sponsored equipment for an additional 2,000 women, bringing the number of beneficiaries in the state to 2,500.

Mrs Tinubu also announced a ₦100,000 cash grant for each beneficiary present at the event.

Her appeal comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with President Tinubu seeking another term in office amid emerging opposition alignments.

Tinubu was elected president in 2023 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeating Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).

Since assuming office, the President has implemented major economic reforms under his Renewed Hope Agenda, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, changes to the foreign exchange regime and tax reforms.

The policies have, however, attracted criticism over their impact on living costs, with Nigerians contending with high food and transportation prices, inflation and other economic pressures.

The 2027 presidential election is expected to be a major political contest, with the South-East remaining a key region for parties seeking to consolidate support ahead of the polls.
