South African authorities have arrested five people after uncovering an alleged large-scale crystal methamphetamine manufacturing operation on a farm in Musina, Limpopo.
The suspects, aged between 20 and 47, were arrested on Thursday during an intelligence-led operation that also led to the seizure of drugs and laboratory equipment estimated to be worth R600 million on the street.
The suspects comprise two Mexican nationals, two Zimbabwean nationals and a Malawian national.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) said the discovery followed a two-month investigation into suspected drug manufacturing activities at the farm.
“The breakthrough follows a two-month intensive investigation into suspected drug manufacturing activities at the farm,” police said.

According to SAPS, the operation uncovered what appeared to be a sophisticated industrial-scale facility allegedly established to manufacture illicit substances for distribution.
The raid was conducted by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, in collaboration with SAPS, the South African Narcotics Bureau Head Office, Crime Intelligence Head Office, Hawks Limpopo, Special Task Force, Drug Enforcement Agency and Homeland Security.
Authorities also recovered an undisclosed amount of cash during the operation.
The Hawks’ Provincial Head in Limpopo, Major General Advocate Gopz Govender, said the seizure had disrupted a major criminal network involved in the illicit drug trade.
“We have struck at the machinery behind the drug trade,” Govender said.
He added that the R600 million seizure went beyond removing drugs from the streets, describing it as the disruption of “an entire criminal enterprise.”
“We will follow the money; the networks and every person connected to this operation. There will be nowhere to hide,” Govender said.
The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, also welcomed the operation, saying it demonstrated the resolve of law enforcement agencies to tackle illicit drug activities.
“We will not allow our communities to become markets for criminal syndicates,” Scheepers said.
He warned those involved in the manufacture and distribution of illicit substances that security agencies were intensifying efforts against them.
“Those who manufacture and distribute these dangerous substances must know that law enforcement is closing in on them,” Scheepers said.
SAPS said the latest operation was the third clandestine drug laboratory to be shut down in Limpopo.
The five suspects are expected to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face charges relating to the manufacture and possession of illicit drugs.
