Elumelu Reconciles With UBA Graduate Trainee After Viral

Former United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has reportedly met and reconciled with the young graduate trainee at the centre of a viral workplace etiquette controversy.
The reported reconciliation comes days after a video from UBA’s Graduate Management Accelerated Programme graduation ceremony went viral, showing the young woman addressing Elumelu as “Tony” during an interactive session, triggering intense debate online.
Elumelu corrected her and asked to be addressed as “Mr Elumelu” or “TOE”, explaining that he doesn’t subscribe to the practice of calling senior executives by their first names. The trainee subsequently addressed him as “Mr. Elumelu” and continued with her question.
The incident quickly generated divided reactions, with some Nigerians defending Elumelu’s preference for a formal mode of address, while others criticised the public correction and raised concerns about the pressure placed on a young employee in front of colleagues and guests.
The latest reports circulating on social media indicate that Elumelu later met the young woman and the two reconciled.
Posts by social media users describing the encounter have circulated on Facebook and X, including reports that they were seen together after the controversy.
However, neither UBA nor Elumelu has at the time of writing, issued a formal public statement independently confirming the reconciliation.
The reported meeting has been welcomed by observers who believe it could help bring an end to the online backlash faced by the young trainee following the viral video.

The controversy had evolved into a wider discussion about workplace etiquette, cultural expectations and first-name policies in Nigerian corporate organisations.
Some argued that employees should use formal titles when addressing senior executives unless invited to do otherwise, while others maintained that modern workplace culture should encourage first-name interactions regardless of hierarchy.
Beyond the etiquette debate, the reported reconciliation has shifted attention towards leadership, empathy and conflict resolution, with supporters describing Elumelu’s decision to meet the young woman as a magnanimous gesture.
For the young graduate at the centre of the controversy, the reported reconciliation could provide a welcome conclusion to days of intense online criticism and scrutiny.
The episode ultimately offers a broader lesson on workplace communication: while respect and organisational etiquette matter, so do empathy, restraint and the willingness to resolve misunderstandings constructively.
With the reported meeting between Elumelu and the young woman, the “Good morning, Tony” controversy appears to be heading towards a peaceful resolution.
