A koko seller in Ahodwo, Kumasi, has come under public criticism after a video allegedly showed her using the same sponge to wash both customers’ bowls and her own feet, sparking outrage and hygiene concerns online.
Two men who claimed to have witnessed the incident stated, “The sponge she uses to wash the bowls is the same one she is using to wash her feet,” raising alarm about the potential health implications for customers who patronise her koko stand.
The footage, which shows the woman seated near her cooking area surrounded by basins and containers typical of a roadside food vendor’s setup, has since circulated widely, drawing criticism from viewers concerned about food safety standards among street food vendors.
Street food remains a major part of daily life for many Ghanaians, particularly for breakfast staples like koko (a fermented corn porridge) sold widely across markets and neighbourhoods.
However, incidents like this continue to raise broader questions about hygiene practices and oversight among informal food vendors, an area regulatory bodies such as the Food and Drugs Authority have periodically flagged as needing closer monitoring.
The identity of the woman in the video has not been independently confirmed.
