97% of Tinubu’s Appointed Ambassadors Receive Host Countries’ Approval – Foreign Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that 97 per cent of ambassadors appointed by President Bola Tinubu have received approval from their respective host countries.

The ministry disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, noting that the diplomatic process for securing agrément for the nominees has progressed smoothly.

According to the statement, 65 out of the 69 ambassadors-designate appointed by President Tinubu after screening and confirmation by the Senate have been accepted by their receiving countries.

The ministry said, “Ninety-seven percent (97%) of the Ambassadors appointed by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, have successfully received the Agreement (Agrèment) of their respective host countries.”

It explained that the process of obtaining diplomatic approval is ongoing in line with established international practice.

The ministry noted that the appointment process was affected by two exceptional cases, including the death of the ambassador-designate to Algeria in April 2026, with efforts underway to appoint a replacement.

It added that the ambassador-designate to Togo declined the appointment offer and the request for agrément was therefore not submitted.

According to the statement, Japan and Mexico are currently the only countries where confirmation of acceptance is still being awaited.

The ministry said it had received assurances from both countries that approval would be communicated in due course.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to assure Nigerians and the international stakeholders that it is actively engaging the relevant authorities in the two countries and is confident that the outstanding Agreements will be conveyed in due course,” the statement read.

The ministry further disclosed that most of the appointed ambassadors had already arrived in their respective countries of assignment and presented their Letters of Credence, officially commencing their diplomatic responsibilities.

It reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence globally and advancing the country’s foreign policy objectives and national interests.
