US Embassy Warns Nigerians Against AI-Edited Passport Photos

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerians applying for U.S. passports and visas against using artificial intelligence (AI)-generated or digitally altered passport photographs, warning that such images will not be accepted and could delay the processing of applications.
In a reminder posted on its official X account on Friday, the U.S. Mission stressed that passport photographs must be authentic, recent, and accurately reflect an applicant’s current appearance.
The embassy advised applicants to avoid AI tools, beauty filters, or any form of digital enhancement when taking passport photos.
“Reminder! Do NOT use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. We will not accept photos that are edited or filtered,” the mission stated.
According to the embassy, passport photographs must have been taken within the last six months and should closely resemble the applicant to ensure easy identification by U.S. border officials.
“Your photo should be recent (taken within the past six months) and look like you, so that TSA or CBP officers can easily identify you,” the statement added.
The mission further warned that submitting digitally enhanced images could lead to significant delays in processing applications.
“Submitting a digitally enhanced photo will significantly delay your application,” it said.
Applicants were also encouraged to consult the U.S. Department of State’s passport photo guidelines to ensure their photographs meet all required standards before submission.
