US Embassy Warns Nigerians Against Using AI-Edited Photos for Visa, Passport Applications

The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned visa and passport applicants against submitting photographs altered with artificial intelligence (AI) or digital editing tools, warning that such images will be rejected and may delay application processing.

The mission issued the warning in a public advisory shared on its official X handle on Saturday, August 1, urging applicants to submit original passport photographs that accurately represent their current appearance.

The advisory stressed that passport photos must be recent, taken within the last six months, and free from filters, retouching or any form of digital enhancement.

According to the mission, immigration and border officials must be able to easily verify the identity of travellers using the photographs submitted during application processes.

The U.S. Mission warned that applicants who submit digitally altered images risk significant delays, as photographs that fail to meet required standards may be rejected.

The advisory read: “Do NOT use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. We will not accept photos that are edited or filtered. Your photo should be recent (taken within the past six months) and look like you (the TSA or CBP agent must be able to tell it’s you). Submitting a digitally enhanced photo will significantly delay your application.”

The mission further reminded applicants that the U.S. Department of State requires passport photographs to be taken against a plain white or off-white background, with applicants facing the camera directly and maintaining a neutral expression.

It added that images must be clear, high-quality and meet all official specifications before submission.

The mission advised prospective travellers to carefully review the U.S. Department of State’s passport photo requirements to avoid unnecessary delays.

It reiterated that only genuine, recent and unedited photographs would be accepted for visa and passport applications.
