The National Peace Committee has brought political parties and candidates together in Abuja for the signing of the first National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The initiative comes as political parties prepare for the commencement of campaigns and intensify their mobilisation activities ahead of the elections.

The accord is expected to commit political parties and candidates to issue-based campaigns, peaceful political engagement and responsible conduct throughout the electoral process.

The National Peace Committee has consistently used the peace accord to promote peaceful democratic competition and reduce tensions among political actors during elections.

The latest initiative comes amid concerns over political violence, hate speech, misinformation, disinformation and ethnic and religious profiling, as well as declining public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Under the accord, political actors are expected to conduct their campaigns without resorting to violence, inflammatory rhetoric or other actions capable of undermining peaceful participation.

The Committee’s experience from previous election cycles shows that the first national peace accord is primarily focused on encouraging issue-based campaigns and responsible political conduct.

Subsequent peace commitments typically centre on accepting credible election results and pursuing legal channels to challenge outcomes where necessary.

The Abuja gathering therefore marks an early attempt to establish a framework for peaceful political engagement well before the 2027 elections.

The National Peace Committee is expected to continue engaging political parties, candidates and other stakeholders as preparations for the elections gather momentum.

The committee’s intervention is aimed at ensuring that political competition remains within democratic boundaries and that disagreements are resolved through dialogue and lawful mechanisms rather than violence.
